PMB format guide

How to format a private mailbox address correctly

A private mailbox number is not a building suite. Use the complete location address, add PMB and the assigned number, and keep Charlotte Mailbox’s existing unit “I” intact.

The correct Charlotte Mailbox address format

Correct PMB format
Customer Name
3020-I Prosperity Church Rd PMB ###
Charlotte, NC 28269

Replace ### with your assigned private mailbox number. Use PMB or #, not “Suite,” for the mailbox number.

Replace “Customer Name” with the recipient name documented for the mailbox and replace “###” with the assigned private mailbox number. Keep “3020-I” exactly as shown: the “I” belongs to the physical location address.

USPS Publication 28 allows either PMB or the number sign before a private mailbox number. Because the street address already includes unit I, PMB is the clearest choice in examples and routine use.

Read the address in three parts

  1. Recipient: The individual or authorized organization receiving mail.
  2. Physical location plus PMB: 3020-I Prosperity Church Rd identifies the receiving location; PMB ### identifies your assigned private mailbox.
  3. City, state, ZIP: Charlotte, NC 28269 completes the delivery destination.

The PMB number should appear on the same line as the street address or on the line immediately above it when a form requires separate address fields. Follow the sender’s format without changing PMB into a different unit label.

Four common addressing mistakes

Wrong

Calling the PMB number a “Suite”

A private mailbox is not a suite. Use PMB or # for the assigned mailbox number.

Wrong

Dropping the “I” from 3020-I

The I is part of the location’s physical address and must remain.

Wrong

Using only the PMB number

The assigned number needs the complete receiving location address.

Wrong

Using an undocumented recipient name

People and organizations receiving mail must be properly authorized and documented under USPS requirements and the agreement.

Review the official USPS Publication 28 private mailbox guidance before launch or whenever rules change.

How to update senders after activation

  1. Copy the assigned address exactly from your mailbox paperwork.
  2. Update banks, vendors, clients, subscriptions, insurers, marketplaces, and personal contacts only where the address is accepted for that purpose.
  3. Use the authorized recipient name expected at the mailbox.
  4. Include PMB ### on every shipment and piece of mail.
  5. Review saved addresses in shopping accounts and carrier profiles.
  6. Watch early deliveries and correct any sender that drops the PMB number or location unit.

Do not rely on carrier autocomplete to preserve every designator. Review the final label before submitting an order.

Formatting business mail

For an authorized organization, the first line can contain the documented business name, followed by the complete street-and-PMB line. A person’s name may appear as an attention line when appropriate and documented.

Authorized Business Name
Attn: Documented Recipient
3020-I Prosperity Church Rd PMB ###
Charlotte, NC 28269

Address formatting does not establish legal eligibility. An agency, bank, licensing body, marketplace, insurer, or filing office decides whether it accepts a PMB for its purpose. Review the business mailbox guidance and verify directly with the institution.

If a website will not accept PMB

  • Look for a separate apartment, unit, or address-line-two field and enter PMB ### there without substituting “Suite.”
  • If the form removes the hyphen or “I” from the physical address, contact the sender rather than guessing.
  • If the organization prohibits private mailbox addresses, ask it what address type is required; formatting cannot override its eligibility rule.
  • For a time-sensitive or high-value delivery, call Charlotte Mailbox and the sender to confirm the label and current package policy.

After signup, review package receiving expectations so that the delivery address and pickup plan work together.
