How to open your Charlotte private mailbox

Opening a mailbox requires choosing Secure Cabinet or a physical box, bringing current identification, completing USPS Form 1583, and using the assigned PMB address.

Before you call or visit

Have the basics ready

Requirements can change. A quick call can prevent a second trip and help the team identify the right plan.

  • Use: Personal or business
  • Recipients: Every adult or business recipient
  • Timing: When you hope to start
  • Volume: Typical mail and package needs
  • IDs: Two different acceptable, current forms
  • Payment: Term total plus setup fee, paid upfront

Six steps

From the first call to correctly addressed mail

  1. 01

    Call to confirm availability

Say whether the mailbox is personal or business, your expected mail volume, desired start timing, and the names of people who will receive mail.

  2. 02

    Choose the mailbox option

Compare lower-cost Secure Cabinet pickup with a physical mailbox offering 24-hour access. Review the six- or twelve-month term total, $35 setup fee, intended use, availability, and agreement. The term total and setup fee are paid upfront.

  3. 03

    Bring the required identification

Each adult applicant generally presents one current, unexpired government-issued photo ID and a different current, unexpired second ID that verifies the physical address.

  4. 04

    Complete USPS Form 1583

Complete all applicable entries. A separate form is generally required for each adult receiving personal or residential PMB mail. Business applicants list intended recipients.

  5. 05

    Complete witnessing or notarization

The signature is witnessed in physical or authorized real-time audio/video presence by the CMRA’s owner, manager, or authorized employee, or acknowledged before a U.S.-commissioned notary.

  6. 06

Receive and use your PMB address

After activation, use the assigned PMB number in the correct address format and update senders. Ask before relying on the address for any regulated or institution-specific purpose.

Identification details

Two IDs must serve different purposes

The first ID is an acceptable government-issued photo ID. The second is an acceptable ID that verifies the applicant’s physical address. The same driver’s license or state non-driver ID cannot be used for both.

Business recipients and authorized additional recipients may also need identification and documentation. Updated information can require a new Form 1583.

Check the current USPS CMRA and Form 1583 guidance and acceptable-identification guidance , then call because USPS rules can change.

Your next step after activation

Give senders the correct PMB format

The location’s unit I remains part of the street address. Your private mailbox number is separate and follows as PMB ###.

Details worth confirming

What identification do I need?

Each adult applicant generally needs two current, unexpired IDs: one acceptable government-issued photo ID and a different acceptable ID that verifies the physical address. The same driver’s license or state ID cannot serve as both. Call before visiting because USPS requirements can change.

What is the difference between Secure Cabinet and a physical mailbox?

With Secure Cabinet, staff hold your mail in a secure cabinet and retrieve it for you during regular counter hours. It is the lower-cost option and does not include scanning, an online portal, or 24-hour self-service access. A physical mailbox gives you an assigned box that you can access 24 hours a day. Staffed help and package pickup follow posted counter hours for both options.

Can I authorize another person?

Additional recipients can be authorized when the required authorization, identification, and USPS documentation are completed. Ask what each person should bring before visiting.

How much does a Charlotte mailbox cost?

Secure Cabinet term totals begin at $144 for six months of Small personal service. Physical mailbox term totals begin at $180 for six months. Medium and Large business plans and twelve-month terms are also available. The selected term total and a $35 setup fee are paid in full upfront. Monthly figures are equivalents only, not monthly payment options.

Is there a setup fee?

Yes. A $35 setup fee applies to each new mailbox agreement in addition to the selected term price. Both are paid in full upfront.

Are term prices paid upfront or monthly?

The selected six- or twelve-month term total and the $35 setup fee must be paid in full upfront. The monthly amounts shown are equivalents for comparison only, not monthly payment options.

How quickly can I open a mailbox?

Timing depends on current availability and completion of the required agreement, Form 1583, identification review, and any business-recipient documentation. Call first to confirm availability and what to bring.
